In 1995, the Victoria Advocate launched the Knowledge Bowl to help increase literacy in the Victoria area by supporting the Victoria Adult Literacy Council (VALC). This year’s Knowledge Bowl, presented by the Advocate and the Rotary Clubs of Victoria, will be on Friday, February 16. Your sponsorship of this event will help the VALC continue its important work! About the VALC. The VALC all about second chances. Our dedicated staff and volunteer tutors give adults not only a chance to improve their reading and English speaking skills, but also help those adults who need to pass a test for getting job training, gaining employment, or advancing in their job. Trained staff also works with those who have literacy difficulties because of learning/reading disabilities. This second chance to learn the skills that can most help them improve their lives, and those of their families will help break the cycle of intergenerational illiteracy that abounds in our country and area. It’ a moving experience to see hope in the eyes of those we’ve helped when they talk getting a better job by improving their English and learning new skills.
